It seems that we look at a successful product in an area where we plan to launch or develop a brand, and immediately think: “well, we need to do the same, and everything will work itself out.”
Yes, for some, the decision to copy a successful experience in design will seem like the most practical or even the only correct one, because there are advantages: the design is relevant, professional, the design has been worked out and tested. But is everything so cloudless, smooth and simple? We dare not agree. Let's determine from a position how negative this can turn out for your brand.
Copyright
Let's start with the formal one. Exclusive rights can be registered for a design that you really want to copy, which is confirmed by relevant documents. That is, the name, corporate identity, and individual brand carriers officially belong to only one company and free use by third parties for commercial purposes is impossible.
If you choose to ignore this point, the brand owner may be, well, loyal: he won't make a big deal of the issue and will simply ask for a redesign, relying on your integrity. But he can also do much stricter and more negative things: sue you or spread rumors about your “bad faith” among those around you and in the media space.
The brand will be confused with others
Even if you are not accused of using someone else's design, potential clients may simply confuse your brand with another company.
Let's say you borrowed a design from a brand with a similar target audience. In this case, customers who monitored different companies in search of a product saw you, your twin competitor and other companies. When they return after considering the offers they saw, they may mistake you and your competitor for the same brand. Or the client chose you, but this or next time he will buy a competitor’s product, simply because he remembered from the outside: “it looked something like this, I’ll take it” - will be in the buyer’s thoughts.
There will be no high trust
If a company values its reputation and tries to justify the declared quality of the product and service, then in return it receives a high level from customers. And it is unlikely that such a company will question its image by repeating the design competitor's brand.
Some of the audience may not attach importance to the similarity of design, and they will purchase the uniqueness of the design regardless of the criteria. But, as practice shows, this is a smaller part of the audience. The majority still takes into account the image component: originality, authenticity, reputation. And an obvious copy will have a bad effect on the level of trust.
Same design ≠ same conversion
The problem is that we see the finished product, but we don’t know the entire mechanism of operation and the role of design in promoting a brand and attracting customers. Therefore, it does not mean at all that you can develop a design exactly similar to a commercially successful brand and immediately achieve its level of performance. Perhaps the main reason for the flow of clients is not related to design at all, and it plays a supporting role in the promotion strategy.
If you completely copy your competitors down to the smallest design decisions, you shouldn’t expect a stir, a surge in sales, or even just interest in the brand. With a high probability, everything will not turn out as expected. We tried to confirm this in the paragraphs above.
Instead of sticking to one brand with a similar product and completely reproducing someone else’s design, it is better to be inspired by successful solutions around you. Maybe not two or three, and not necessarily only in your field of activity. Having studied many techniques: the logo looks cool, the product counter is attractively designed, and it’s convenient for customers to receive feedback on their website - you have the opportunity to collect dozens and hundreds of ideas, and from them recreate something of your own. Or successfully combine different solutions and get a new, independent one.
And also a win-win option is cooperation with the Veonix design studio. Here you will definitely find a solution and it is guaranteed will develop a unique design. Below we will write how you can continue communication: get a consultation, discuss your project, leave a request.
